MSW Practicum Opportunity: Strommen Center for Meaningful Work

The Strommen Center for Meaningful Work at Augsburg University hosts a Master of Social Work (MSW) practicum for students interested in applying social work practice within a higher education and student success setting.

This placement offers MSW students the opportunity to work alongside professional staff supporting undergraduate students as they explore goals, navigate barriers, and connect their education to meaningful career pathways.

What You’ll Do

MSW interns engage in generalist social work practice within a campus environment and gain experience working with students, staff, and campus partners. Opportunities may include:

  • Observing and co-facilitating student coaching conversations focused on strengths identification, goal setting, and decision making
  • Supporting students with resource navigation and referrals to campus and community supports
  • Assisting with workshops, classroom presentations, and outreach initiatives that help students explore career pathways
  • Contributing to program development and assessment efforts, including reviewing engagement patterns and identifying opportunities to improve student access
  • Participating in initiatives that expand career and experiential learning opportunities for students

A Social Justice Lens

The Strommen Center approaches career development as an issue of access, equity, and social mobility. Many students face structural barriers that shape their educational and career opportunities.

Through this placement, MSW interns will engage in work that supports first-generation college students, students of color, multilingual students, and students from historically marginalized communities. Interns will contribute to outreach and programming designed to expand access to opportunities that help students build long-term economic and professional stability.

What You’ll Gain

Students in this placement will strengthen skills in:

  • Professional communication and relationship building
  • Strengths-based student engagement
  • Ethical decision making in non-clinical settings
  • Program evaluation and data-informed decision making
