Intensive Summer Education Program in Translation Research for Undergraduate Students (INSPIRE-US) is a 10-week long summer program for undergraduate that aims to expose students to the careers and work in clinical and translational science (CTS). Participants will receive a mentored research experience, career counseling and classroom instruction on the fundamentals of CTS. Program participants will be matched to one of three thematic areas for mentored research experiences: biological basis of health and illness, clinical and public health research, and health technology and innovation. Participants will be compensated $8,000 for the summer (pre-tax), receive a $1,000 housing stipend for the summer and $500 for travel. Case Western Reserve student/guest housing is available for participants but note that the cost of CWRU housing exceeds the housing stipend. Students are expected to pay the difference.

Please review the eligibility requirements and program details on our program website.

There will be a virtual programing in May and in-person programing in June and July. The in-person program dates are: June 1st- July 24th and will take place in Cleveland, Ohio. There will also be virtual sessions in the spring. Meeting dates/times are TBD and dependent on accepted student availability. Students are expected to be fully engaged and present during the duration of the program.

What is Clinical and Translational Science (CTS)?

The National Institutes of Health defines clinical and translational science as converting observations made in the laboratory, clinic, and community into interventions that enhance the health of individuals and the public at large. This includes everything from diagnostics and therapeutics to medical procedures and behavioral changes.

Eligible Program Participants

To be eligible to apply for the program, you must:

  • Have an interest in a career related to clinical and translational science
  • Proof of current undergraduate enrollment status (e.g., transcript, letter from advisor, or registrar) indicating good standing at college or university. Students enrolled at a community college are encouraged to apply.
  • Ready to be engaged and committed to fully participate in the program for the program dates provided. Please avoid double booking your summer and committing to multiple summer programs/experiences
  • Be a U.S. citizen or lawfully admitted permanent resident*

*Note: Note: Applicants who are not US citizens MUST have a green card or permanent residency card, per the NIH. Applicants with student visas, like the F or M visa, are not eligible for this program.
