Nature Camp Counselor

Green River Preserve is a coed summer camp in the mountains of Western North Carolina. Located on a pristine 3,400-acre wildlife preserve, we inspire environmental stewards through a joyful connection to nature.

Camp counselors join a community of bright, curious, and creative people dedicated to learning about and preserving our natural environment. By leading campers, working in teams, and building life-long friendships, Counselors develop professional skills like leadership, conflict management, and creative problem-solving that will strengthen any career.

Environmental Education Experience

Counselors live and work outside for the summer, teaching and sharing the natural world with children ages 7-15. Serve as an authority figure and guide for up to seven campers by living with them, creating a safe and fun cabin environment, and assisting our professional naturalists as they lead daily hikes on the Preserve.

Classic Camp Activities

Counselors also dive into an immersive teaching experience, ideal for aspiring educators, by learning and leading classic camp activities each afternoon. Based on their interests and experience, we place Counselors in a handful of activity areas as a leader or class assistant. Activities include:

  • Mountain Biking
  • Arts & Crafts
  • Fly Fishing
  • Climbing
  • Riflery
  • Pottery
  • Canoeing
  • Outdoor Skills
  • Music

Adventure Leadership Training

The culmination of a Counselor’s summer experience is a two-night beginner backpacking trip on our land. We call this program Campout, and it takes place four times over the summer. Counselors work as a team to plan and facilitate an outdoor adventure trip in the woods, which includes:

  • Hiking
  • Orienteering
  • Outdoor Cooking
  • Fishing
  • Fire Building
