Micro-Internships VS Job Simulations

Micro-Internships

Micro-Internships are short-term, paid, professional projects that allow students to develop relationships with potential employers, gain valuable experience, explore career options, and demonstrate your capabilites. From working directly with an entrepreneur to supporting a large enterprise, you’ll have the opportunity to explore different roles and company cultures in a way that fits into your schedule.

Job Simulations

Job simulations build real-life skills for real-life roles, offering a window into the company and a preview of their day-to-day. Job simulations are 100% free, open access and self-paced. This is not a paid experience.

Additionally, InterSECT also provides job simulations for areas such as the sciences and the humanities (which Forage does not have as many opportunities for). While these simulations don’t evaluate an individual’s performance or offer the self-guided virtual interface of Forage, they offer great insight into the specific responsibilities and projects someone in that particularly career path may undertake. No account is needed to access these simulations as they are available on the InterSECT website through a Creative Commons license.

Bottom Line

Parker Dewey, Forage, and InterSECT offer experiential learning opportunities where students can apply what they learned in the classroom while gain valuable skills needed for the work place. All are great options for students who may have limited experience in their field and want to build tangible skills and/or experience what it would be like to work for such employers. Both experiences from Parker Dewey and Forage can be added to your resume and/or LinkedIn. Please refer to guidance from the respective platforms on how to do so.
